You need two equations to calculate how many total calories your body uses up in one day. First, you need to determine how many calories you burn through exercise. Your body uses calories to fuel muscle contractions during any movement, whether it be running or washing dishes. Second, you need to determine your basal metabolic rate, or BMR. Your BMR is the rate at which your body burns calories to power vital functions such as your heart, lungs, brain and other organs. Combining these two figures will show you how many calories you use up in one day.

Exercise Calories

Step 1

Obtain the use of a calories-burned calculator, such as the one provided at the HealthStatus website.

Step 2

Type in your weight and the time you spent throughout your day performing any of the many exercises listed.

Step 3

Click "calculate" to find the number of calories you burned through exercise in one day.

Basal Metabolic Rate

Step 1

Figure your BMR, if you are a woman, by multiplying your height in inches by 4.7, subtracting your age in years multiplied by 4.7, then adding your weight in pounds multiplied by 4.35. Finally, add 655 to the total to find the number of calories your basal metabolism used in a day.

Step 2

Calculate your BMR, if you are a man, by multiplying your height in inches by 12.7, adding your weight in pounds multiplied by 6.23, then subtracting your age in years multiplied by 6.76. Then add 66 to the total to find the number of calories you use in a day through your basal metabolic rate.

Step 3

Add your BMR calories to the number of calories you burn through exercise. This will give you the total number of calories you use up in one day.
