Diabetes is a common health problem among Americans that may lead to serious health consequences. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 19.7 million people in the United States had been diagnosed with diabetes as of 2009. The Center also notes that the number of people with diabetes in the United States tripled between 1980 and 2009. Before using juniper berries or other herbs to help treat your diabetes, meet with your family physician to review procedures, risks and alternatives.
Diabetes
Diabetes is a chronic health problem characterized by elevated blood glucose, or sugar, levels. Diabetes affects all types of people, regardless of age or ethnicity. According to the Diabetes Partnership of Cleveland, approximately 33 percent of children born in 2000 will develop diabetes at some point during their life, and almost 50 million Americans will have this condition by the year 2050. Blurry vision, fatigue, increased urinary frequency, increased hunger and weight loss are common signs or symptoms associated with diabetes.
About Juniper
Juniper, also known as Juniperus communis, is a shrub or woody plant that grows to a maximum height of about 6 feet and bears fruit -- berries -- that have long been used for medicinal purposes. The juniper shrub grows in numerous regions of the world, including North America, Europe, North Asia and North Africa. Important phytosterols in juniper berries include alpha-pinene, borneol, camphor, glycolic acid, limonene, rutin and tannins. Juniper berries also contain many nutrients, including manganese, phosphorus, potassium and vitamins B-1, B-2, B-3 and C.
Juniper Uses
Juniper has long been used to treat various health problems. In her book "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," certified nutritional consultant Phyllis A. Balch says juniper berries have been found to lower blood glucose levels, which is especially helpful for diabetics. Juniper berries appear to possess hypoglycemic action, or the ability to restore elevated blood sugar to a safe and healthy level. A larger body of scientific research evidence may be needed to examine the full health benefits of this herb in treating diabetes.
Disclaimer
Diabetes is a health problem that may best be managed by a qualified health care professional. This condition may lead to significant complications -- including organ damage and blindness -- if it is not properly managed. Though juniper berries may be a helpful adjunct therapy in controlling your blood sugar levels, you should avoid using this natural substance until you have discussed the advantages, disadvantages and limitations of herbal remedies for this health purpose with your doctor.
