Electrolytes are minerals that play an important part in most bodily functions. Sodium, potassium and chloride and bicarbonate are the electrolytes important to all cells and organs of the body. Loss of electrolytes can be due to overexertion, poor diet and deficiencies, with symptoms including diarrhea, thirst, fatigue and chills. There are many sports drinks and the like that are infused with electrolytes, but a cheap-yet-effective version of these drinks can be made at home with ingredients probably already at hand.

Step 1

Obtain a container that can hold at least 1 liter of water and fill it with a liter of purified water.

Step 2

Measure 1/2 teaspoon of salt and add it to the container, then measure out 6 level teaspoons of sugar and add it to the water.

Step 3

Stir the mixture with a long utensil until the sugar and salt are completely dissolved. Close and store the drink in the refrigerator for use whenever electrolytes need to be replaced.

Tips and Warnings

  • The ingredients can be multiplied for larger quantities of the mixture.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 liter purified water
  • Large fluid container
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
