Reiki refers to an energy present in all living things. Practitioners of Reiki equate the individuality of a person's energy pattern to the uniqueness of a fingerprint. Reiki treatments aim to transfer good energy into the recipient and heal any physical or emotional deficiencies he is experiencing. You can perform a Reiki treatment on yourself, but you must first be taught the practice by a Reiki master.
What is Reiki?
The word itself comes from two Japanese words meaning "universal" and "life force." Other terms used to describe this energy around the world include "chi" and "spirit." Reiki energy has been acknowledged since ancient times, but modern treatments meant to heal the energy were founded by Dr. Mikao Usui. Practitioners use hand positions, either above the client or lightly upon her body, to effect healing. The healer channels energy through her own hands into the body of the recipient, according to Reiki theory. Treatments normally last from 30 to 90 minutes.
Training
There are three levels of Reiki practice. The first level of training allows you to perform treatments on yourself and others through the "laying on of hands." This training includes a process to open your own energy channels to ensure that the energy you pass on to clients does not drain your own energy supply. The second level, normally offered after about six months of practice, teaches you the skills needed to perform a treatment without the client being in front of you. You also will learn treatments for special circumstances and a higher energy level. The final level, or master training, is for practitioners devoted to Reiki. This training allows a practitioner to teach Reiki to other people.
Alignment
During each training level, a master performs an attunement or empowerment on the student. This process opens the chakras, or energy centers, in your head, heart and hands. With the chakras open, energy can be aligned among your mind, body and spirit -- this alignment allows you to heal others. Once completed, the attunement cannot be lost, even if you take an extended absence from Reiki practice.
Benefits of Attunement
Each attunement increases the your ability to channel Reiki energy. The energy you use to heal becomes more powerful with each alignment a Reiki Master performs on you. You may also experience increased mental clarity, more psychic abilities and a sharper sense of consciousness, according to Reiki theory.
