Vitamin C, potassium, flavonoid antioxidants and fiber are all present in an apple, making it a convenient and nutritious snack or side. Apples also provide phytochemicals, such as the phenol antioxidants ellagic acid, caffeic acid and chlorogenic acid. Freshly juiced apple juice retains many of these nutritional and phytonutrient compounds and is a common ingredient in cleansing fasts and detoxification diets.

Pectin

Apple juice is particularly high in the soluble fiber pectin, which is cleansing for your colon, according to nutritionist Cherie Chalbom, M.S., author of "The Complete Cancer Cleanse: A Proven Program to Detoxify and Renew Body, Mind and Spirit." Pectin slows absorption of food and binds to toxins and heavy metals, removing them from your body. Use unfiltered apple juice, which contains the most pectin.

Colonoscopy

Apple juice is a useful cleansing agent if you are preparing for a colonoscopy. This procedure requires that you adopt a special cleansing diet for several days preceding the test so your doctor can read the results clearly. The University of Texas Southwest Medical Center recommends drinking apple juice, white grape juice, chicken broth and other clear liquids during this period of light eating.

Gallbladder

An apple juice detoxification diet may improve gallbladder function, according to chiropractor James Forleo, author of the book "Health Is Simple, Disease Is Complicated." A cleanse specifically for the gallbladder uses large quantities of apple juice, as much as 1 qt. per day for several days. If you are diabetic or have insulin resistance, avoid drinking this much apple juice or use low-sugar apples such as Granny Smith or Pippin, or dilute the apple juice with water. You may also opt for a longer time frame or different approach for your cleanse. Instead of drinking larger quantities of apple juice over a few days, consume smaller quantities of apple juice in conjunction with other detoxifying substances, such as psyllium husk or bentonite clay, says Forleo.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Consider incorporating some apple cider vinegar into your apple juice detoxification program. Apple cider vinegar contains compounds known as prebiotics that act as a food source for the beneficial bacteria in your intestinal tract. It also provides digestive enzymes that assist your detoxification diet by decreasing the amount of energy and resources your digestive system must expend to digest foods, allowing your body to divert that energy toward internal cleansing, according to Dr. Art Dash, author of "Secrets to Lowering Cholesterol with Nutrition and Natural Supplements, Safely." Enymes are heat sensitive, so to derive the most benefits, choose raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar, which contains active, intact enzymes.
