Exercise is an integral part of a healthy lifestyle -- it increases energy levels and improves poor sleeping habits. Physical activity assists in weight-loss or maintenance, improving your mood and decreasing the risk of depression. Furthermore, exercise helps decrease the risk of serious health conditions, including high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke and heart disease. However, many adults do not incorporate enough physical activity into their lives due to lack of time or boredom. To combat exercise boredom, consider adding fun activities or making creative changes to your workout regimen.
Dancing
Dance to incorporate some fun into your exercise regimen. It's a good way to burn off calories, increase the heart rate and work up a sweat. According to AARP.org, dancing is a fun activity that can rejuvenate the spirit, improve mood, tone your body, increase flexibility and strengthen bones. Try various styles of dance to find a form you enjoy and aim for 30 minutes a few times a week. Options include ballroom dancing, hip-hop, latin and even Zumba, a popular dance-exercise class taught in large fitness chains.
Functional Exercise
Add functional exercise to a workout regimen to prevent boredom. Functional exercise involves performing exercises that are based on real-life movements. For instance, many daily activities, such us lifting groceries, climbing hills and stairs or picking up your children require using the major muscle groups including those of the chest, back, legs and abdominal region. Performing functional exercises in the gym break up the monotony and boredom of simply going from one weight machine to the next where you are sitting and not using your stabilizing muscles as effectively. Although these exercises can be challenging, such as performing one-legged squats, deadlifts and step-ups with dumbbells and barbells, engaging a partner to alternate exercises with and doing them to music make them rewarding. Make them more fun by going to a local park and do squat jumps over tree stumps or lunges in the sand.
Team Sports
Join a sports team to add fun to your exercise program. Solo activities, such as jogging, swimming or using a machine at the gym are common exercises. However, these activities may get repetitive and not as exciting if you are more extroverted and are easily bored or distracted. Engaging in team sports by joining a soccer or volleyball league, ice hockey or even ultimate Frisbee can get you moving while also being around others. This helps the time pass by more quickly. If you're too intimidated to join a team or league, consider rounding up a few friends a couple times a week for a basketball game or even a group cycling class or hike.
Exercise DVDs
Use a DVD to ignite some spark into a stagnant exercise routine. Choose from a variety of available programs, such as yoga, kickboxing, Zumba or dancing routines to work your major muscle groups from the comfort of your own home. Many videos offer a variety of routines on one DVD so you can select a different workout session daily. By incorporating exercise bands, dance moves and using a variety of models, the instructors use variety to shake up your routine, as well as work to motivate and encourage you. Furthermore, you could make up your own routine by turning on a music playlist and setting a timer for 20 minutes -- have fun freestyle dancing throughout your house.
