1. The Effects of Asthma
Though asthma is common in all age groups, one third of cases involve children under 10 years old. Symptoms include coughing, wheezing and breathlessness. Attacks can be brought on by pollen, cigarette smoke, dander, fungi and mold. Stress and hormonal changes can also trigger an attack. Treatment is usually comprised of removing allergens if possible and taking medications to reduce inflammation and open the air passages.
2. The Effects of Hay Fever
Hay fever, or allergic rhinitis, is caused during certain seasons of the year by airborne pollens from grass, weeds, tress and fungi. Other allergens such as mould and dust mites can cause year round symptoms. Symptoms include sneezing, itchy and runny nose and eyes and sinus pain. Treatment of hay fever involves removing the allergen, if possible, and talking allergy shots or tablets, usually antihistamines.
3. Dermatitis
Atopic dermatitis is a type of eczema. It usually begins in early childhood and is associated with asthma and rhinitis. The cause is unknown. Symptoms include itchy red patches which can appear on the face or body. The patches can become weepy and crusty. Treatment is aimed at eliminating itching by means of application of lubricants and moisturizers directly after bathing, while the skin is still damp.
4. Poison Ivy, Oak or Sumac
These plants can cause a type of contact dermatitis which produces red itch lumps that can fester and weep, eventually forming a dry crust. Rubbing the skin with alcohol will remove the oil but will only be effective if you do it less than 10 minutes after contact. Treatment at home includes antihistamines. For a severe reaction, a doctor's appointment will be needed and prescription corticosteroids may be given.
5. Food Allergies
Just about any food item can cause an allergic reaction. Food allergies are more common in children but can occur at any age. Some common food allergies result from eating nuts, gluten (wheat products), cow's milk, strawberries, eggs, shellfish and chocolate. Food allergies can produce a range of symptoms including headaches, skin rashes or hives, selling of the lips, mouth and/or throat, runny nose, abdominal cramps, vomiting and diarrhea. Treatment for food allergies includes antihistamine medications to reduce watery and swollen eyes. Soothing baking soda baths to ease skin symptoms. The allergenic food should be removed form the diet at all times.
