Alcohol use among teens is a widespread problem in the United States, with rates as high as 50 percent among 13-year-old kids, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Several factors go into whether your teen will drink, many of which are beyond a parent's control. Establishing a bond of trust with your child is the first step on the path to keeping him alcohol-free.

Step 1

Set a good example for your kids. Drink responsibly; stay within your limits. Always stay away from your car if you've been drinking.

Step 2

Talk openly about all issues, including drinking, to keep the lines of communication open. Let your children know you are there; reiterate that they can call you if they need to leave a situation where alcohol is being consumed.

Step 3

Set limits and rules for your household, including specific rules regarding alcohol consumption. Be clear about consequences and discipline; be consistent to avoid confusion.

Step 4

Sign your kids up for extracurricular activities like sports or recreation camps to help build their self esteem with positive hobbies and interests.

Step 5

Educate your kids on some of the risks involved in underage drinking. Teach them about the potential for alcohol poisoning, injury due to impaired judgement and alcoholism. Support any initiatives the school is taking; suggest new ones if you don't feel enough is being done.

Tips and Warnings

  • Try to support your teenager's growth and development as part of your overall parenting plan.
