Most children display, at one point or another, the traits described as a symptoms of hyperactivity. Symptoms include forgetfulness, inattention, being easily distracted, interrupting the conversations of others, talkativeness, fidgeting, failure to follow instructions and climbing at inappropriate times. These behaviors become a concern, however, when they are excessive and disrupt the child's ability to learn and socialize properly. Many parents are understandably reluctant to use synthetic medications to treat their child's symptoms. A number of alternative approaches are available.
Medication Side Effects
Many parents seek out alternative methods to treat their hyperactive children due to the potential side effects that accompany traditional ADHD medications. Some of the more well known side effects include stomach problems, lethargy, jitters, headaches or difficulty sleeping. Although these side effects may sound less severe than some others, they still present concerns. These side effects may obviously result in a more difficult time in school. Kids with these symptoms may also have greater difficulty with family and social interaction due to irritability.
Osteopathy
Osteopathy treats the musculo-skeletal system. It is a form of drug-free, non-invasive manual medicine that focuses on total body health by treating and strengthening the musculoskeletal framework. Osteopathy seeks to positively affect the body's nervous, circulatory and lymphatic systems. The American Osteopathic Association claims that many children with hyperactivity symptoms have allergies, which often lead to congestion. This congestion may affect how they think, feel and act. Treatments designed to drain fluid from the head can aid the child's cognitive function.
Nutitional Therapy
Nutritional therapy focuses on correcting dietary deficiencies. The National Therapy Association believes "the myriad of health problems that plague modern society result from weaknesses in the body's physiological foundations as a result of poor nutrition." Various sources contend that children may manifest hyperactivity as the result of food allergies and these aforementioned nutritional deficiencies. Suggestions include curtailing dairy products, reducing junk food intake, watching sugar intake, cutting fried foods and avoiding food coloring.
Homeopathy
Homeopathic medicine was developed in Germany some 200 years ago. According to the National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine, homepathy works under the principle of "similars," or like cures like. The center states, "The principle states that a disease can be cured by a substance that produces similar symptoms in healthy people." A doctor specializing in this field would work with parents to find alternative medications to Ritalin, for example, which is typically prescribed.
