The Resolution Revolution Diet kicked off the first week of January 2011. Designed by Dr. Mehmet Oz and co-sponsored by Nike, this 11-week weight loss program offered an individualized online fitness assessment and meal plan as well as an online support group. More than 430,000 people registered for this free program the first week it was offered. Each Monday, for 11 consecutive weeks, Dr. Oz featured a new topic on his show related to his Resolution Revolution program.

Getting Started

The 11-week weight loss challenge was announced on January 3, 2011. It was a free online weight loss program that started with a questionnaire asking detailed questions about your past and current health level, medical concerns, lifestyle choice and fitness goals. Nike provided a team of fitness and nutrition experts to create a "customized program from a fitness professional" for each participant. The Resolution Revolution Diet offered a concrete plan to help you set and reach a realistic weight loss goal in just 11 weeks.

Diet

Participants were given an online food tracker and were asked to enter all the food they consumed. There was an online database of more than 70,000 foods to choose from, including items from popular restaurants. The food tracker kept a record of caloric and nutrient intake, and personalized menu suggestions were given to help you stay on your plan. Your individual caloric needs are based on gender, activity level, current weight and weight-loss goals. Nutrient-dense and low-calorie filling foods are emphasized, particularly vegetables and foods high in omega-3 fats.

Exercise

The program was co-sponsored by the Nike SPARQ Training Network; in addition to online workout videos and webcasts, participants were given personalized recommendations about Nike products that could help them to reach their goals. There were also live webchats and product giveaways. Most fitness programs emphasized weight-bearing and strength-training activities because building muscle boosts your metabolism and allows your body to burn more calories at rest. Participants were asked to exercise 30 minutes daily.

Dr. Oz

Dr. Mehmet Oz directs the Cardiovascular Institute and Complementary Medicine Program at New York Presbyterian Hospital and is Vice-Chair and Professor of Surgery at Columbia University. His daytime talk show has won two Emmy awards, and he written more than six books, including "YOU: On a Diet" and "You: The Owner's Manual." His message is simple: "Eat Less. Move More. Lose Weight. Feel Great." Oz suggests making small sustainable lifestyle choices such as following a healthy balanced diet, setting realistic weight-loss goals and exercising often. Although the 11-week Resolution Revolution program is over, his website offers several other health challenges.
