Lipozene is a weight loss supplement made from glucomannan, the active fiber in the Asian konjac plant. According to the manufacturer of this product, Lipozene does not require you to make significant changes to your dietary or exercise habits to lose weight. Further, the manufacturer claims that you will lose weight and body fat in a short period of time. However, the manufacturer does not support its claims with clinical evidence. Speak with a doctor prior to consuming this supplement.
Glucomannan
Glucomannan is a polysaccharide that contains the sugars mannose and glucose. This water-soluble fiber is the active ingredient in Lipozene. Glucomannan comes from the root of Amorphophallus konjac plant. This fiber can absorb up to 200 times its weight in water, according to the book "Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine." The manufacturer of Lipozene claims that this fiber will help you lose weight. However, the Food and Drug Administration has not approved glucomannan as a weight-loss supplement because no clinical studies exist that support the claim that it will help you lose weight.
Dosage
One bottle of Lipozene contains 60 capsules, and the manufacturer recommends taking two capsules three times per day before meals. Take the pills with an 8 oz. glass of water. The manufacturer also states that you can take one pill three times per day if you want to lose a lesser amount of weight.
Claims
There is no evidence that taking Lipozene in and of itself will cause you to lose weight. Advertisements used by the product manufacturer claim an average weight loss of 3.86 lbs. over eight weeks and that 78 percent of this lost weight comes from pure body fat. However, Vladimir Vuksan, professor of nutritional sciences at the University of Toronto, states that no evidence exists to support these claims. A safe and effective long-term weight loss program must include both dietary changes and exercise.
Fiber and Side Effects
By adding natural fiber to your diet, you can promote weight loss and improve your overall health. Good sources of natural fiber include vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, beans, peas, legumes, grains and whole-grain products. There are no known side effects associated with Lipozene. However, always drink water when taking this supplement. Failure to consume water with this product may result in choking or a blockage of the throat, esophagus or intestines.
