Vaginal dryness is a common symptom of the declining estrogen levels associated with menopause and reproduction. Vaginal bacterial infections, such as candida, can also produce symptoms of dryness. Acidophilus and bifidus play an important role in maintaining the balance of bacteria in your body, and may help to restore vaginal moisture in the case of certain health conditions. Although there are few health risks associated with acidophilus and bifidus supplements, talk to your doctor before using them for treatment purposes.

Vaginal Dryness

Vaginal dryness typically results from a reduction in the amount of lubrication naturally produced within your vagina. Dryness is often accompanied by sensations of soreness, itching, and swelling, and can cause significant discomfort during sexual intercourse. While dryness can emerge as a symptom of certain prescription drugs and severe stress, the most common cause is the shift in estrogen levels during pregnancy, lactation and menopause. Although vaginal dryness associated with childbearing typically subsides within a few weeks to a few months, the estrogen losses experienced during menopause can result in vaginal atrophy, in which the vaginal walls become more fragile and lose much of their natural moisture. Vaginal bacterial infections may also cause a loss of vaginal lubrication.

Acidophilus

Acidophilus is a type of bacteria that occurs organically in the intestines and vagina. Known as a "good" form of bacteria, acidophilus helps to maintain the health of the digestive tract and an optimal vaginal ecology. There is substantial evidence to suggest that when taken as an oral supplement or used as a suppository, acidophilus may be effective in treating vaginal bacterial infections, such as candida albicans and vaginitis. As of 2011, there is no explicit data on its effectiveness for relieving vaginal dryness related to estrogen. However, when vaginal dryness occurs as a result of candida overgrowth, also known as a yeast infection, acidophilus may be effective for restoring the balance of vaginal flora and producing moisture.

Bifidus

Like acidophilus, bifidus is a type of healthy bacteria that exists in the intestines. Bifidus may be effective in boosting the immune system and can aid in regulating the bacterial balance in your body. Bifidus supplements are typically used in the treatment of gastrointestinal and digestive disorders, and the bacteria are also commonly added to acidophilus supplements. As of 2011, there is no substantial scientific evidence to suggest that bifidus provides an effective remedy for vaginal dryness. However, as with acidophilus, bifius helps to support healthy flora in your body and may help in the treatment and prevention of vaginal dryness related to bacterial infections.

Vaginal Health

While vaginal dryness is generally not an indication of a serious health problem, the condition can cause physical discomfort and can negatively interfere with your quality of life. At-home remedies, such as acidophilus, bifidus, vitamin E oil and over-the-counter lubricants, may help to relieve vaginal dryness. However, severe vaginal dryness can affect the urinary tract and may cause bleeding during intercourse. If you experience persistent dryness, talk to your women's health provider to discuss options for treatment.
