Dr. Oz's B.E.A.C.H. body diet is a simple formula. Each of the letters in "beach" represents a different step in the diet. According to a post from June 2010 on BeautyTiptoday.com, three participants from Dr. Oz's show lost between 30 to 60 pounds by following his plan for over four months. Although this diet may have been developed by a physician, it is still important to talk to your medical doctor to find out if it is right for you.
B for Breakfast
The "B" stands for breakfast in Dr. Oz's diet. He suggests having breakfast soon after waking up, claiming that those who eat a healthy breakfast lose more weight than those who do not. This is supported by a 2002 study published in "Obesity Research," which found that eating breakfast was a common factor among those who were successful at weight loss. Dr. Oz recommends eating high protein and high fiber foods to help provide energy and fight hunger. Examples of healthy breakfast items include scrambled eggs and whole wheat toast, whole grain cereal, and whole oats with skim milk.
E is for Elimination and Exercise
The "E" in B.E.A.C.H refers to eliminating simple carbohydrates. Not unlike the South Beach Diet, the B.E.A.C.H. diet recommends eating whole grains and avoiding processed grains as much as possible. Examples of foods to avoid include white rice, products made from white flour, such as cookies, cakes, and white bread, as well as sugary cereals and white pasta. Instead, try brown rice, whole grain cereals, whole wheat or multi-grain breads, and whole grain pasta. Other simple carbohydrates to avoid include soda, candy and fruit juice.
According to Dr. Oz, "E" also stands for exercise. He recommends getting some form of exercise almost everyday. This can be anything from aerobics, weight training or yoga to a long, brisk walk.
A is for Antioxidants
"A" stands for antioxidants. Dr. Oz recognizes the importance of consuming the right nutrients for optimal health. He notes that fresh fruits and vegetables are rich in these compounds and can help combat inflammation and a variety of related health problems. Look for produce that is rich in color, especially red, orange and yellow. Examples include berries, citrus fruits, melons, tomatoes, carrots, red, yellow and orange bell peppers, and squashes.
C is for Chocolate
The "C" in B.E.A.C.H. may be the biggest surprise of all. Dr. Oz recommends consuming dark chocolate each day. He says eating dark chocolate that is at least 70 percent cocoa is actually healthy for you. He notes that chocolate not only helps satisfy your craving for sweets, but is additionally rich in antioxidants. Eat only dark chocolate as milk chocolate is lower in antioxidants and white chocolate has none at all.
H is for Hydration
The "H" stands for hydration. As with most diet plans, Dr. Oz promotes the healthy habit of drinking plenty of water. He claims that many times when you think you are hungry, you are actually thirsty, so try drinking a glass of water before reaching for a snack. According to the Mayo Clinic, adults excrete around 10.3 cups of water each day just from sweat, urination and breathing. The rule of thumb is to consume at least eight, 8 oz. glasses of water each day. The Mayo Clinic recommends for 9 cups for women and 13 cups for men daily.
