Similar to salt, sugar can cause your body to retain fluid. Many brands of soda contain approximately 28 g of sugar per 8 oz. serving and can lead to bloating and the storage of excess water weight. If you drink soda regularly and are noticing fluid retention on your body, there are several steps you can take to release the water buildup.
Step 1
Stop consuming sugar and soda altogether. The more sugar you consume the worse the fluid retention will become. Substitute sugary soda by squeezing fresh lemon into a glass of sparkling water.
Step 2
Hydrate with regular drinking water rather than soda. Consuming soda laden with sugar rather than water may lead to dehydration, and being dehydrated can cause your body to store water weight. Stay hydrated by drinking an 8 oz. glass of water every hour.
Step 3
Reduce your consumption of junk food, such as chips and pretzels. These foods usually contain a large amount of sodium which, along with the sugar, can cause bloating.
Step 4
Fill up on fruit and vegetables throughout the day. These foods can help you to stay satiated, which may reduce your cravings for salty or sugary foods and beverages. Plus, fruit and veggies contain lots of water, which will help you stay hydrated.
Step 5
Incorporate a regular exercise program into your week. Choose a vigorous activity that will allow you to sweat, such as running, indoor cycling or yoga. Sweating helps flush out excess fluid retention.
