Tennis overgrips are small rolls of grip tape that provide players with the ability to customize the feel of the racket handle. Besides altering grip size, overgrips can increase or decrease the tackiness, softness, color and moisture absorption of a tennis racket handle.

The Difference Between an Overgrip and Replacement Grip

Two types of grips are generally used on the handles of tennis rackets: overgrips and replacement grips. Replacement grips, sold in individual packets, are installed directly onto the pallet of the handle of the racket, and are thick and durable. Overgrips, most commonly sold in packs of three, are usually installed on top of replacement grips and are thinner and less durable. Many people choose to use overgrips because of their low cost to replace.

Overgrips and Grip Size

Installing an overgrip on a racket increases the grip size slightly. Overgrips, in general, increase grip size by 1/16th of an inch. This can be useful if your hand measures between standard racket grip sizes. Buying the grip size slightly too small for your hand and installing an overgrip can provide a better fit.

Tackiness

Each overgrip has qualities that can help you customize the feel of racket handle. Grip tackiness is a measure of stickiness and resistance to twisting. Many players prefer tacky grips because of their stable, sticky feel in the hand. Very tacky grips, however, can make rapid grip changes difficult.

Moisture Absorption

The ability of an overgrip to absorb moisture is of paramount importance to players with moist and sweaty hands. Once grips become saturated with moisture, the racket can easily slip out of your hand. Overgrips such as Tournagrip, Dunlop Hydromax, and Wilson Pro Overgrip provide excellent moisture absorption, reducing the chances of the racket slipping in your hand.

Cushioning

For players who prefer a cushioned, dampened feel, soft overgrips are ideal. Gripping a tennis racket for long periods of time puts considerable amounts of strain on the skin of the hand. Many players develop blisters, particularly if you are increasing the number of hours you are playing. Soft, cushioned overgrips provide comfort to sore hands.
