There's a lot of talk surrounding metabolism and what it means for your diet. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, metabolism is your body's ability to convert nutrients from the food and drinks that you consume into energy. This energy propels your body's basic functions, such as digestion, respiration and circulation. MayoClinic.com warns you to be wary of any product that claims to "speed up" metabolism. Instead of directly speeding up your metabolism, juicing allows the body to convert vegetables and fruit into nutrients quickly because its liquid form allows it to conveniently by-pass the digestive system.

Step 1

Gather different types of fruits and vegetables. There are no set rules when it comes to juicing and you can make any juices that appeal to your palate. Ensuring you eat different types of fruits and vegetables allows you to eat a variety of healthy nutrients and vitamins. Choose fruit and veggies that embody a range of rainbow colors, since each color imparts different nutrients.

Step 2

Choose organic produce whenever possible to reduce the likelihood of ingesting pesticides. Because you throw most fruit and vegetables into the juicer whole, you might accidentally drink pesticide residue that remains on the skin of the fruit.

Step 3

Throw a combination of your favorite fruits and veggies in your juicer. Try to aim for more vegetable juice than fruit juice, since too much fruit juice can cause a spike in your blood sugar level. For example, try juicing carrots, celery, beets, apples and ginger for a sweet drink that is high in vegetable content.

Step 4

Make a metabolism-boosting juice with watercress and grapes. According to "The Juicing Book" both watercress and grapes act as a metabolism booster by stimulating oxygen levels and circulation. One bunch of watercress is equal to 1 oz. of juice and 1 lb. of grapes equals 8 oz. of juice.

Tips and Warnings

  • Try drinking a fresh juice first thing in the morning before you have had any breakfast for an optimal energy boost.
  • Fresh juices oxidize quickly so it is always preferable to drink your juice as soon as possible.
