Acupressure can be effective in treating a myriad of disorders caused by tension. The technique is used to access and release blocked energy at different points along the body's channels of life force energy, called meridians. As an acupressure practitioner works with the points that are implicated in anxiety and nervousness, toxins and stagnant energy are encouraged to flow and be released, helping the recipient relax and maintain a general sense of calm, even in tense situations. Conditions that might be an underlying cause of anxiety, like insomnia and depression, might respond to acupressure treatment as well. Consult your doctor before beginning an acupressure regimen.
Mechanism of Action
Part of acupressure's benefit in treatment for disorders on the anxiety spectrum is its ability to stimulate the release of endorphins, which are substances produced by the body that reduce pain and contribute to feelings of well-being. The well-known sense of relaxation and enhanced mood, or "runner's high," that long-distance athletes experience can be attributed to the phenomenon of increased endorphin circulation. Vanderbilt University reports that acupressure elevates the amount of nutrients that flow to muscles, helping them to metabolize and remove wastes, which facilitates relaxation as well.
Kidney 1
The Kidney 1 point, also known as the "Gushing Spring" point, can be used to calm someone who is restless or in shock. It also can be used to combat general anxiety and hypertension. It is located on the bottom of the foot, toward the center. It can be found by running your thumb to the center of the foot, following the groove between your second and third metatarsal bones.
Liver 3
Often referred to as the "Great Splurge" point, Liver 3 is known as a major thoroughfare of life force energy and can alleviate tightness and spasms in tendons and ligaments. It also is used by practitioners to soothe energy moving through the meridian system that is overwhelmingly aggressive. Liver 3 is found on the top of your foot, about 3 cm behind the web between the first and second metatarsal bones.
Heart 7
The Heart 7 point also is referred to as the "Spirit Gate" or "Mind Door" point. It is used to ease general anxiety, calm an overactive mind and relieve insomnia. It is found on the inside of your wrist, in line with the pinkie bone. These points can be massaged in a series, using firm, circular strokes, for up to five minutes at a time.
