Aches and pains, nausea, vomiting and swelling feet are all well-known parts of pregnancy. More than half of pregnant women experience a slightly more embarrassing symptom at some point during their nine months gestation. Constipation occurs when bowel movements are infrequent and stools are hard and difficult to pass. The best remedy for irregularity is to eat a healthy, well-balanced diet and exercise frequently. Sometimes, however, fiber supplements might be necessary to ease your discomfort. Talk to your physician before taking any supplement during your pregnancy.

Constipation

In most people, constipation is the result of inactivity, stress, poor diet and anxiety. In pregnant women, however, constipation is a little more complicated. In gestating women, hormones cause the muscular walls of the intestines to relax, which allows food to move through more slowly for optimum digestion. Additionally, as the fetus grows, the uterus expands and pushes into the intestines and colon.

Fiber

A high-fiber diet often helps to ease the discomfort of constipation and prevent its recurrence. Fiber comes in two types, soluble and insoluble. Both help to soften the stool but insoluble fiber also attracts extra water into the waste material, making it easier to pass. A healthy diet is the best source of fiber. Fibrous foods include fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, potato skins, nuts, seeds, oatmeal and berries. Keep in mind that without adequate fluid intake, a high-fiber diet actually can make your constipation worse. Pregnant women should drink at least 10 to 12 glasses of water per day.

Fiber Pills

Fiber supplements generally are considered safe for pregnant women. There are variety of supplements available without a prescription, but consult your health care provider to find a supplement appropriate for you. Common side effects of fiber pills include gas, nausea and abdominal pain. Additionally, some supplements might prevent or inhibit the absorption of other medications.

Considerations

Read labels carefully at the pharmacy before making a purchase. While fiber supplements like Metamucil and FiberCon generally are safe for pregnant women, fiber laxatives can be dangerous. Laxatives can cause cramps that mask the contractions of preterm labor. Additionally, regular use of laxatives might foster dependency and make it difficult to move your bowels without assistance.
