How to Keep a Lunch From Leaking in a Backpack

Any company can call its containers leak proof, but that doesn't mean they are or that they stay that way after repeated use. Rather than finding out the hard way that a soup container has lost its ability to stay completely closed, resort to an old trick from elementary school -- a thermos bottle. These not only have an outer cap but an inner seal that stretches relatively deeply into the thermos. Add additional protection in the form of a bag and bracing, and you should be able to keep your lunch where it belongs.

Step 1

Pour the liquid, be it soup, tea or another drink, into the main body of the thermos.

Step 2

Close the inner seal tightly. The seal is an oblong cap that screws into the top of the bottle.

Step 3

Attach the top cap, which will screw down onto or snap over the inner seal.

Step 4

Turn the thermos upside down and check for leaks. If it leaks, tighten both caps and turn upside down and check again. If it's still leaking, the thermos is defective.

Step 5

Place the thermos inside a large plastic zippered bag, and seal the bag.

Step 6

Place the bagged thermos in the backpack and arrange books and other goods around the bottom of the thermos. Keep packing items in until the thermos stays upright. If you are not taking many goods, pack a couple of small towels around the bagged thermos.
