Calcium is a mineral found most abundantly in the teeth and bones. Along with vitamin D, this minerals works to reduce bone loss and strengthen bones to reduce the risk of fracture. People with increased calcium needs, such as pregnant or menopausal women and seniors, may have to take calcium supplements in addition to taking a multivitamin to get their recommended daily allowance.
Multivitamins
Multivitamins contain a mixture of vitamins and minerals. These vitamins are formulated to contain the recommended dietary allowance of vitamins and minerals for people based on their age and sex. If you are taking a multivitamin that contains calcium, such as a complete multivitamins, you should not have to take a calcium supplement.
Calcium Supplements
Calcium supplements are sold as single supplements that can be taken in capsule form or chewable form. The recommended dietary allowance, or RDA, of calcium for adult men and women is 1,000 mg per day, according to the Office of Dietary Supplements. This increases to 1,200 mg per day for women between 51 and 70; both men and women should get 1,200 mg per day over the age of 70. Most supplements will contain the necessary amounts, but you may have to take more than one tablet per day. Follow the directions on the bottle for proper dosing.
Mineral Toxicity
Taking more than the RDA of calcium may result in calcium toxicity. You can overdose on calcium by taking too many supplements at once or taking a high dose regularly over time. Some over-the-counter antacids also contain calcium, which if taken along with calcium supplements can result in toxicity. Symptoms of calcium overdose are abdominal pain, bone pain, coma, confusion, depression, diarrhea, headache and irregular heartbeat.
Concerns
Do not take calcium supplements unless your doctor recommends that you do so. According to Drugs.com, postmenopausal women may have an increased risk of cardiac arrest or heart disease if they take calcium supplements. Increase calcium in your diet by consuming low-fat or nonfat dairy products, such as yogurt or milk.
