Lip scars can form as a result of acne, injury or a piercing, sometimes growing outside of the wound's natural border. Although scar tissue forms as a natural response to the body's healing process, they can become unsightly and embarrassing. Collagen fibers group together, causing your scar to become raised and thick. By utilizing proper skin care techniques, you can help fade and flatten scar tissue while prompting healing in the skin's deeper layers.

Step 1

Apply an over-the-counter vitamin E or cocoa butter cream to your scar tissue. According to Cleveland Clinic, these topical treatments have shown promise in some scar sufferers; however, there is no medical evidence to back up their effectiveness. Scar creams are also available that contain retinols. Retinols are designed to remove top layers of damaged skin, evening skin tone and texture with repeated use.

Step 2

Purchase an over-the-counter chemical peel kit. Chemical peels using fruit and milk acids are available for use on sensitive areas of your face, such as your lips. For larger, deeper scars, visit your dermatologist for a professional chemical peel. Chemical peels work by removing the top layer of skin, promoting healing and new skin formation.

Step 3

Visit your dermatologist for light therapy or laser therapy. Light therapy utilizes differing light frequencies to distribute collagen fibers evenly, while laser therapy works much like a chemical peel by heating the deeper layers of skin. This heating can result in proper collagen distribution and scar fading, according to DermaDoctor.

Step 4

Remove dead skin by opting for microdermabrasion treatments. Microdermabrasion is available as a home treatment or through a licensed aesthetician. This treatment uses small crystals to polish the surface of your skin and remove dead skin cells. This promotes scars to lighten and flatten gradually.

Step 5

Ask your doctor about soft tissue fillers for indented lip scars. Soft tissue fillers use collagen from humans or bovines to plump depressed scars, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Injections must be repeated regularly.
