A radish is a brightly colored root vegetables that isn't likely to be at the top of your weekly shopping list. Although radishes are rarely found in recipes, they are nutritious and add crunch and flavor to meals. Radishes are packed with vitamins and have a high water content, so they'll keep you feeling full on fewer calories, while giving you the nutrition you and your family need to grow healthy and strong.

Nutrition Facts

Radishes add flavor and texture to your meals while adding only negligible fat and calories. A 1-cup serving of sliced radishes contains 19 calories, 0.1 g of fat, 3.9 g carbohydrates, 1.9 g fiber, 0.8 g protein and 2.5 g sugars. Radishes contain no cholesterol whatsoever.

Vitamins

A 1-cup serving of sliced radishes contains negligible amounts of vitamins such as beta carotene, thiamin, riboflavin, lutein and vitamin K. Radishes contain more substantial amounts of vitamin C -- approximately 17.2 g per 1-cup serving, which is nearly 30 percent of your recommended vitamin C intake based on a 2,000-calorie diet. Additionally, 1 cup of sliced radishes contains 29 mcg folate and 7.5 g choline.

Minerals

Radishes are a source of both calcium and iron. A 1-cup serving of sliced radishes contains 29 mg calcium and 0.39 mg iron, approximately 4 percent of the daily requirement for each mineral. Radishes also contain 7 mcg fluoride, which prevents cavities and keeps teeth strong and healthy. Additionally, a 1-cup serving of radishes contains 12 mg magnesium and 23 mg phosphorous.

Water Content

Radishes have a high water and fiber content, meaning they will keep you full and satisfied for longer than a dense food that contains the same number of calories. Radishes contain 110.51 g of water per 1-cup serving, and 1.9 g of fiber. This high water and fiber content makes radishes a filling, low-calorie topping for salads, tacos and sandwiches. Radishes add bulk to your meal but only a few calories, which may help you lose weight if you replace a higher calorie topping such as cheese with radishes.
