Sulfazine (generic name: sulfasalazine) is a medication used to treat ulcerative colitis and rheumatoid arthritis. Sulfazine is available as a tablet that is usually taken daily after a meal. According to Drugs.com, tell your doctor whether you suffer from asthma, liver or kidney disease because Sulfazine may not be as effective.
Minor Side Effects
According to MedlinePlus, Sulfazine's minor side effects include diarrhea, headache, stomach pains, poor appetite and vomiting. Notify your doctor if these symptoms persist or worsen.
Serious Side Effects
Drugs.com states that Sulfazine's serious side effects include fever, sore throat and flu-like symptoms. Sulfazine can also cause the skin to turn yellow, and in some instances, result in easy bruising, blistering and peeling red rash. Darkening of urine and the passing of the whole Sulfazine pill in your stool are other side effects that should be reported to your doctor.
Other Side Effects
According to the National Library of Medicine, Sulfazine can affect your blood cells and cause anemia (low red blood cells), thrombocytopenia (low platelets) and leukopenia (low white blood cells). Sulfazine may also lead to serious skin diseases such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome and epidermal necrolysis. Both these conditions are characterized by painful red rashes, blisters and a fever, with epidermal necrolysis also causing widespread peeling of the outer layers of your skin. Drowsiness, hearing loss and kidney problems such as hematuria (blood in your urine) or proteinuria (protein in your urine) are other side effects of Sulfazine use.
