Protecting yourself from credit card theft and fraud can save you a lot of headaches. If your credit cards are not protected, you may have false charges placed on them and deal with the hassle of lobbying to have the charges removed. Even if the charges are removed, the theft may adversely affect your credit rating. Taking a few small steps to protect your credit cards can prevent many problems.
Step 1
Write down your credit card numbers, expiration dates and bank phone numbers and put them in a safe place in case of theft. Keep your credit card with you at all times. Never leave your wallet or purse unattended, even in the workplace. Avoid leaving your credit card in your car as well. Many credit cards are stolen from motor vehicles as well as at the workplace.
Step 2
Examine the card after it has been returned to you. A type of fraud that can take place is your card may be switched by the cashier or another worker after you have given it to them to make a purchase. Make sure it is your card when the person hands it back to you.
Step 3
Report the card missing right away. If you suspect you have misplaced the card or it has stolen, don't hesitate to call your credit card company immediately. The sooner that you contact them, the sooner they can put a freeze on your account. This can prevent the criminal from racking up a large amount of charges.
Step 4
Memorizing your pin can protect your funds from a criminal trying to access your money from an ATM. You should, however, record your account numbers in case the cards are stolen.
Step 5
Review your credit card statement each month. Go through each item to make sure the charges belong to you. Report any discrepancies to your credit card company immediately.
Step 6
Sign the back of your credit card as soon as it arrives. If you have an expired card, shred and dispose of it.
