Having an infant who has a fever that comes and goes can be alarming to parents. Since an infant's immune system is still young, it's important to monitor your child closely. You can also take a few steps to make your baby more comfortable during illness. It's also important to know when it's time to seek medical attention.

Fever Causes

An infant's fever that comes and goes is often caused by a virus. And If your baby is active during a fever, her body temperature might increase during activity. Another possible cause is a bacterial infection. Inflammatory conditions and vaccines are other possible causes for an infant's ongoing fever, according to MayoClinic.com.

Treating Infant Fever

Using a fever reducing medication, like acetaminophen, is tempting. However, talk with your doctor first. These medications aren't usually recommended for a low-grade fever. And using a fever reducer in a baby with a low-grade fever might even prolong illness. If your doctor recommends it, administer the medication as instructed. Never give your infant aspirin, which is linked to Reye's syndrome, a serious and sometimes fatal condition.

Home Remedies

If your infant has a fever, take a few steps to make her feel better. Allow your infant to soak in a lukewarm bath for five to 10 minutes. Use a sponge to spread water over her arms, legs and torso. If she starts to shiver, remove her from the bath. Muscle shaking might cause a fever spike in your infant.

Dress your infant in light, breathable clothing. Cotton is a good option. This allows heat to escape from her body. Also, keep your home at a temperature of 68 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit.

Red Flags

There are times when an infant's fever warrants a call to the doctor. If your baby's fever comes and goes for two days or longer and isn't getting better, call the doctor. She will likely want to examine your baby to determine the fever's cause. Also, if your baby is under 3 months of age and has a fever, call the doctor right away. A baby with a fever who seems unresponsive or refuses to eat and drink should be given immediate medical attention.
