Whether you're self-employed or employed by a company, effective networking can play an important role in your career growth. Networking is simply the process of getting to know people and giving them the opportunity to get to know you. It's a simple concept to understand, but networking can have big benefits.

Types

There are two basic types of networking: formal networking and informal networking. Formal networking involves attending events specifically designed to connect people in a given industry, organization or geographic area. Informal networking takes place in any social setting, including social media sites such as Facebook or MySpace, where you meet people and forge relationships with them.

Function

Networking enables you to grow the number of people you know. By building and maintaining relationships with a diverse group of people, you're essentially marketing yourself. Networking gives you the opportunity to seek new career opportunities, to investigate different businesses and companies, to give and receive career advice, to find mentorship and to enhance your standing in a particular organization or industry.

Benefits

Networking is one of the most successful ways to develop your career. According to the Center for Career Services at the University of Washington in Seattle, networking is responsible for as many as 70 percent of all jobs people get, and having a personal referral increases your chances of making a sale by as much as 80 percent.

Considerations

Some networking organizations, such as local chambers of commerce and professional groups, may charge membership fees or dues to join. It's a good idea to ask to visit a meeting before joining to make sure the networking group fits your particular needs. Also, keep in mind that networking is a two-way street, and you should be prepared to give as well as to receive the benefits of networking.

Expert Insight

The U.S. Small Business Administration recommends several strategies to make the most of your networking opportunities. Be prepared with business cards and other information when you attend a networking event, and be sure to collect cards from people you meet. Set goals for yourself before a networking event, such as committing to introducing yourself to a certain number of people. Choose clothes that present a professional image. Follow up with people you meet within a few days of your event or meeting so that you're still fresh on their mind when you meet them.
