Wu Yi Tea
Wu Yi tea is a variety of oolong tea. Oolong tea is believed to be beneficial in weight loss when regularly consumed--at least one cup a day. Oolong tea, like all other teas, comes from the Camellia sinensis plant. Oolong tea differs from other teas (green and black) because it is processed differently and allowed to oxidize before it is heated. Caffeine and increased fat oxidation ability allow the consumption of Wu Yi tea to help you lose weight. Keep in mind that the only way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you consume. Tea contains no calories and oolong tea helps to slightly increase your energy expenditure, making it a useful tool in weight loss. However, it is not a magic weight-loss potion.
Caffeine
Wu Yi tea contains caffeine. Caffeine is a stimulant and speeds the metabolism so you burn more calories. It can also help suppress the appetite which can aid in weight loss. Caffeine is also a diuretic, meaning it will cause you to use the bathroom more often. This will result is a reduction of water weight.
Fat Oxidation
A study performed by the Beltsville Human Nutrition Research center showed that caffeine is not the only way oolong tea helps you lose weight. Some study participants were given full strength oolong tea and others were given caffeinated water. The participants who drank the tea had a higher rate of fat oxidation than those consuming only caffeine. Wu Yi tea contains polyphenols, which encourage fat oxidation. This means that the tea contains compounds that encourage the body to burn more fat.
