Garlic is a type of vegetable that has gained the attention of scientists in recent years for its possible anti-cancer properties. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine says that garlic is sometimes used to help prevent cancer tumors in the stomach and colon. Although garlic has other types of health benefits, there is not enough evidence of its efficacy in cancer tumor treatment and prevention. Always check with your physician before using garlic supplements to treat any illness.

Features

Garlic contains compounds that are thought to contain anti-cancer properties. According to the American Cancer Society, allyl sulfur compounds found in garlic may help the body get rid of tumors by killing cancer chemicals. The American Cancer Society also says that garlic may contain immune-boosting chemicals that might help cancer patients fight the disease, but there is no clinical evidence to date.

Evidence

As a part of a healthy diet, regular garlic consumption can have the potential to reduce blood cholesterol and high blood pressure. However, garlic supplements do not seem to have the same effect. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, as of 2011 no studies have indicated that garlic directly helps treat stomach and colon cancers. One study on garlic capsules as a preventive measure for stomach tumors found the supplements ineffective.

Indications

Garlic cloves are most commonly consumed cooked or even raw. Raw garlic cloves can be converted into liquid supplements and oils. Other types of garlic supplements are available in capsules and powders that you add to water. Supplements are taken once or twice a day as part of a healthy lifestyle. The American Cancer Society says there is mixed evidence as to which form of garlic is the most effective for cancer prevention and treatment. Always check with your physician before taking a new supplement. Garlic supplements can interfere with prescription medications as well as anesthesia.

Considerations

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine deems garlic as safe for most adults. Some people might experience an allergic reaction to garlic; symptoms range from skin rash to breathing problems. Eating too many raw garlic cloves can cause stomach problems and heartburn. Garlic also has blood-thinning properties, so it may be best to avoid supplements if you are planning to undergo any type of surgery. Although garlic has benefits, you should not rely on it as your sole source of cancer protection. Always follow your doctor's guidelines in terms of medical treatment for tumors.
