Most destination weight-loss programs are styled as spas or pampering wellness retreats that just happen to involve low-calorie meals and strenuous exercise options. A hardcore, military-style weight-loss "boot camp" is basically the opposite of such a retreat. Boot camp-style weight-loss routines have grown in popularity in recent years, according to the American Council on Exercise. Weight-loss boot camp programs vary, of course, but in general you can expect little coddling and lots of sweat --- a suitable setup for people who feel as if they could use a hearty serving of discipline along with their low-calorie lunch.

Benefits

Choose a military-style boot camp if you crave the structure, discipline and food-controlled environment of a real boot camp, but with the camaraderie and expert support of a weight-loss program. The no-excuses environment will challenge you to push beyond any self-imposed limitations you have and nudge you to try new activities. Also, being away from the usual demands of work and home will let you focus your energy and attention on weight loss without the quotidian distractions that sink so many dieters.

Challenges

Starch your backbone before heading to a military-style weight-loss boot camp, especially if you are a sensitive person, because you may face levels of pushing --- ranging from a friendly, "Keep trying, you can do it!" to a gruff, barked, "Don't you dare step off that treadmill" --- that you are not accustomed to in your everyday life. In addition to interpersonal challenges, you will likely have to confront serious physical challenges because you will do more exercise than most people do in a day.

Activities

Jump into a whole new world of physical activity with a weight-loss boot camp. Depending on your exercise habits and lifestyle background, as well as the particular camp you choose, you may end up tackling obstacle courses, rock-climbing walls, mountain trails or even ocean waves. A military-style boot camp may give you the chance to learn an activity you've always wanted to try, so check the activities description before you sign up. Alternately, the activities may be strictly old-school --- think pushups, squats and running drills.

What to Bring

Bring everything on the recommended-gear list, of course. Along with all the basics, which will likely include athletic apparel, bed linens and lounge wear for your precious leisure time, you may also want to bring something that will remind you of why you are at the camp in the first place. For example, if you want to lose weight and get in better shape so you can play with your young daughter at the playground, bring a framed photo of her to help motivate you when you don't feel like getting out of bed for early-morning exercise.
