Teen Drug Treatment

Teens abuse drugs for many reasons, including peer pressure, depression and social issues. When a teenager is abusing drugs, it affects all areas of her life such as school, family and friends.

Basics

Many types of treatment are available. The first recommended step is to set up an appointment with a licensed mental health professional who specializes in working with teens and substance abuse.

Types

The main types of treatment for teens who abuse drugs are individual and family therapy, group therapy, intensive outpatient programs, short-term and long-term rehabilitation, and detoxification.

Considerations

The type of treatment a teen needs is based on his level of use, what drugs he is using and whether he suffers from any other mental health issues, such as bipolar disorder.

Benefits

Each level of treatment has its own benefits. For example, getting away from drug-using peers and family issues is a benefit of rehabilitation programs. Intensive outpatient programs allow the teen to stay at home with his family while receiving individual, family and group therapy.

Options

It's possible to begin with a lower level of treatment and increase it if needed.
