Power 90 X, also known as P90X, is an intense DVD-based fitness routine that can be performed at home. The focus on P90X is using your own body weight as the resistance when training, but there are several exercises that require weights or other equipment. In addition, P90X features a yoga workout that requires the use of a yoga mat.
Chin-Up Bar
The majority of the arms and back routines utilize a chin-up bar in the exercises, so this is an essential piece of equipment. The P90X program recommends using its P90X brand chin-up bar that can fit in most doorways, but any chinup bar can be used, including those that are part of a power tower machine. Many of the tricep exercises include dips, so it may be better to purchase a power tower to perform chinups, dips and pullups.
Dumbbells or Resistance Bands
Although most of the exercises included in P90X focus on using your own body weight, dumbbells or resistance bands will help you achieve larger biceps and back muscles. P90X recommends several dumbbells ranging from 5 to 70 lbs. or using Selecttech brand dumbbells because you can change the weight of the dumbbell simply by switching a dial. Or, perform each of the exercises that need a dumbbell with a resistance band. P90X recommends using B-Lines brand resistance bands.
Yoga Mat and Yoga Blocks
A yoga mat is essential for both the yoga workout and the P90X plyometrics workout. P90X recommends a Manduka mat because it reduces the amount of stress that is placed on your tendons and joints during the yoga and plyometrics workouts, although any yoga mat will work. If you find that the yoga poses are too difficult to hold, purchase yoga blocks and use them until your body has acclimated to the workout.
Optional Equipment
A heart rate monitor allows you to keep track of how hard you are working out. P90X recommends using the P90X brand heart rate monitor, but one is not necessary to perform the workouts. A body fat tester will help you keep track of how much fat you are losing, but it is also not necessary. If you find that pushups are no longer providing enough resistance, purchase powerstands, which will increase the difficulty of your chest workout.
