Athletes are motivated to play sports for many reasons. For some, it is simply the joy of competition. Getting out on the athletic field and competing at a high level means putting yourself to the test and that can serve as motivation in and of itself. Others may see sports as a means to an end because they are rewarded with a professional contract or a college scholarship. Others want to live a healthier life.

Competition

One of the joys of sports for many participants is competition. When you play in a team or an individual sport, there is usually a winner and a loser in each event. The scoreboard tells the story of who won and who lost and the issue is not in doubt. You know you have to go out and play your best in order to have a chance to succeed because your opponent is also trying to do the same. The player or team that performs the best gets rewarded with victory.

Teamwork

Many individuals like being part of a team because they are all working for a common goal. In football, for example, all the players on the offensive team are trying to get the ball in the end zone to score a touchdown. Each player has a different job to do to make that happen. Players learn that working together gives a team to be much more successful. They are all working hard for the good of the team and that's the greater motivating factor than the betterment of the individual player. Teammates in tough, physical sports such as football or ice hockey know that everyone on the team has sustained bumps, bruises and injuries on behalf of the team and that helps the motivate players to play for each other.

Championship Aspirations

You have a specific goal when you get on the field or the ice in sports. You want to be the best and prove it by winning a championship. Other avenues of life don't give an individual a chance to see how they compare to the competition. In professional, college and high school sports, teams learn that if they win in the postseason, thy keep on playing until they get to the championship round. Winning that championship has been described by many athletes as the most satisfying moments of their career and the reason for playing.

Scholarship/Salary

When athletes begin playing competitive sports, they may do it for the love of the game. But they usually learn that there are rewards for those who perform at the highest level. High school athletes may win scholarships that allow them to get a college education without having to make a financial expenditure. Many athletes dream of playing professional sports that provide great compensation. Athletes often find themselves as the beneficiaries of great publicity and become public figures who take on leadership roles in society.
