Hydrocodone APAP is the combination of the medication hydrocodone with acetaminophen (Tylenol). According to the National Library of Medicine, hydrocodone is always combined with other ingredients. It's used to treat moderate to severe pain. Hydrocodone is in a class of medicines called opiates (narcotics). It works by changing the way your body responds to pain. Hydrocodone can be habit forming, so it's important to take it exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Don't stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor.
Common Side Effects
Some side effects of hydrocodone are easily tolerated and don't require contact with a doctor. However, if any of the following persist or seem extreme, your doctor should be contacted. The National Library of Medicine reports that common side effects include: nausea, drowsiness, dizziness, difficulty thinking, anxiety, extreme feelings of mood, dry throat, rash, itching or shrinking pupils.
Serious Side Effects
Some side effects of hydrocodone APAP can be dangerous, meriting immediate medical help. Hydrocodone can cause slowed or irregular breathing or chest tightness and changes in urine output. Tell your doctor immediately if your hearing becomes impaired or you lose your hearing. Other serious side effects include: severe constipation, low blood pressure or allergic reaction, according to EMedTV.
Warnings & Signs of Overdose
Hydrocodone, like all narcotics, can impair mental and physical abilities required to operate machinery or drive a car. Do not do these things until you know how hydrocodone will affect you.
Due to the fact that hydrocodone is combined with acetaminophen in this medication, taking above the maximum dose can cause serious (possibly fatal) liver disease. Seek emergency service immediately if you have symptoms of liver damage: severe nausea, yellowing eyes or skin, dark urine, stomach pain or extreme fatigue. Alcohol can increase the risks of side effects of hydrocodone.
It is possible to overdose on hydrocodone. If you suspect someone has overdosed, contact emergency services immediately. Signs of overdose include: seizures, cold, clammy or blue skin, slowed or stopped heartbeat, excessive sleepiness, shallow or stopped breathing, narrow or widened pupils, or loss of consciousness. Overdose of hydrocodone can lead to death.
