Toes Burn When Walking on a Treadmill

A burning sensation at the toes is not an uncommon condition among walkers and runners. Walking for long durations on a treadmill can sometimes lead to inflammation at the toes, which can make your walking workout an unpleasant experience. The causes for burning sensations can be varied. Speak with your doctor to accurately diagnose the cause if the burning persists.

Neuromas

Neuroma is a medical condition marked primarily by the burning sensation at the toes. Nerve endings between the toes can become irritated from overuse due to repetitive motions. The irritation comes from friction created by metatarsal bones in the toes that rub against each other and move around too much. Continuous walking on a treadmill can exacerbate the problem. Often, icing the toes can help relieve the burning sensation and calm the irritation. Padded insoles for the balls of your feet can also help reduce neuroma symptoms.

Shoe Ventilation

Athletic shoes must properly ventilate your feet and toes to keep them cool. If your shoes don't allow for fresh air to pass through, your feet can't evaporate the sweat that builds. Too much sweat increases the friction inside the shoe, which can lead to a burning sensation between your toes. Buy walking shoes that come with a mesh upper. The mesh allows for air to pass through to cool your foot. You should also wear socks made from breathable material, such as cotton. Nylon socks typically don't evaporate water as efficiently as cotton.

Shoe Fit

The friction inside the shoe from walking can increase if it does not fit properly. You walking shoes should provide a snug, yet comfortable fit. The upper and sole of the shoe must secure your foot and limit friction. If your toes are crowded in the front, then your walking shoes are too small, and you can develop a burning sensation between the toes due to increased friction. Don't buy shoes that feel too tight, believing that breaking them in molds the shoe to your foot. Shoes should fit comfortably from the moment you first try them on.

Overtraining

Walking long distances can cause your toes and feet to burn, especially if you are new to walking regularly on a treadmill for exercise. As a beginner, you must pace yourself and slowly build your distance and pace of your walks. Overtraining can cause you to have to sit out on workouts and lead to more serious health problems than just burning at the toes. Set small goals every week and allow your body become accustomed to regular walking. Your feet will be better able to deal with the stress you place on them with walking and reduce the risk of developing a burning sensation.
