The Bowflex TreadClimber is a combination cardio machine. You can adjust the movement of the pedals to mimic a treadmill, elliptical machine or stepper. Although the TreadClimber has a treadmill action, it does not offer all the features of a standard treadmill. Each machine offers different benefits and drawbacks.
TreadClimber Details
The Bowflex TreadClimber has two independent treadles -- large pedals with a revolving belt. The belt revolves around the pedal and the pedal moves up and down. Lock the treadles in place and set the belts in motion to mimic a treadmill. Unlock the treadles and freeze the belts to mimic a stepper machine. Run the belts and unlock the treadles to create a forward and rotational movement that mimics an elliptical machine.
Benefits
The Bowflex TreadClimber offers more workout options than a treadmill. With a treadmill, you only have one movement option. On the TreadClimber, you can walk, stair climb or glide. Variety is an important factor in maintaining motivation and consistency in your fitness routine. The gliding motion of the TreadClimber, which simulates an elliptical machine, is a low-impact exercise that is easier on your joints than a treadmill.
Limitations
The TreadClimber offers a walking option, but unlike a regular treadmill, you cannot jog or run. Depending on the TreadClimber model, the treadles have a top speed of 3.8 to 4.5 mph. This equates to a fast walk or slow jog for most people. The treadles lock in a flat position or at a 10 percent incline, depending on the TreadClimber model. Most treadmills offer a 0 to 10 percent or 15 percent incline, adjustable in .5 percent increments. Some treadmills even offer a decline option that mimics walking downhill.
Bottom Line
Which machine you choose will depend on your training goals and fitness level. A treadmill may offer you more consistent training, such as if your goal is to participate in a marathon, while a TreadClimber may appeal to you if you seek more variety. Whichever machine motivates you to work out consistently is ultimately the best choice.
