On many occasions, the weather plays a factor in how you dress for the sport you are going to play. This is especially important in winter sports, where the freezing cold can cause frostbite or leave you ill if you do not dress correctly. Winter sports athletes might have to deal with subzero temperatures, blowing winds and driving snow, so dressing appropriately is a must.

Headwear

Hats are extremely important to wear in the cold, as they keep your head warm and can help prevent your ears from getting frostbitten. Whether you prefer cotton, wool or a different material is largely up to preference, as long as the hat helps stop the wind. Skiers, snowboarders and other winter sports athletes also should consider wearing helmets, as falls are common and can be dangerous. Ski and snowboard helmets have ventilation if needed, but you can also buy a helmet specially designed to keep your head warm.

Layers

Layers are important to keep your body warm during winter sports, with many winter athletes wearing layers underneath a windproof jacket to maximize warmth and flexibility. The inner layer should not be cotton, which can absorb sweat, and should ideally be a moisture wicking material. Athletes then layer on top of the base layer based on the temperature outside, with fleece, sweaters or sweatshirts worn underneath a windproof shell. Athletes who are focused on speed look for clothing that is also form-fitting to reduce drag.

Gloves

Winter sports athletes often wear something over their hands, and what they wear is based on how much dexterity they need. A skier holding poles may opt for gloves so that there is more mobility in the fingers, while a snowboarder may opt for mittens, as they do not hold onto anything and mittens often keep your hands warmer. Your choice can often come down to personal preference and how much you will need to use your hands in the sport you are playing.

Boots

Skiers and snowboarders wear sport specific boots, that either clip or snap into their equipment. These are designed to function with the skis and snowboards, while also providing warmth and protection from the elements. If you are snowshoeing or playing another sport that does not have sport specific footwear, look for a waterproof pair of boots that fit well so that your feet stay dry and warm.
