Although some companies might promise otherwise, there is no magic pill that will completely stop grey hair. As you age, grey hair becomes the norm. Part of it is genetics --some people have grey hair earlier than others. Still, certain vitamin and mineral deficiencies might result in early or increased grey hair. If your diet is not well balanced, some supplements can help you deal with greying.
Vitamin B-12
Anemia caused by a B-12 deficiency can result in grey hair. A B-12 deficiency is a common cause for grey hair in children, according to Dr. Alan Greene, a Professor of Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine. Because B-12 is only available from animal products, strict vegetarians are more likely to develop a deficiency.
Folic Acid
A folic acid deficiency can result in grey hair, among other things, according to MedLine Plus. This is partly because folic acid is directly involved in the production of protein, the building block of hair. Folic acid works with vitamins B-12 and C, so you might need to take supplements of those other two vitamins to improve results.
PABA
PABA or Para-Aminobenzoic Acid is a compound used to treat a number of hair and skin problems. In fact, PABA is the most common active ingredient in sunscreen products. Although not an essential nutrient, PABA supplements can help in the treatment of skin discoloration and premature grey hair.
Other Supplements
A number of other supplements can help with grey hair, including biotin, inositol and zinc.. Keep in mind, however, that they only help if you have a deficiency. If your grey hair is due to genetics, there's not much you can do to get rid of it.
