You should strive to be as aggressive as possible on the basketball court. Exhibiting aggressive behavior in public is frowned upon and it can get you in big trouble, but it is a welcome asset in basketball. The most aggressive players on either end of the floor are often the best ones. Of course, you have to play with controlled aggression to avoid injury and fouling out of the game.

Step 1

Don't be afraid to make mistakes. The basketball bounces off your foot during the dribble and goes out of bounds. The wide-open shot completely misses the hoop and falls to the floor. The attempted shot block is not timed right and results in a foul. Aggressive players understand that failure is a part of basketball and don't shy away from making mistakes. It's part of the game, and dwelling on miscues prevents you from being an aggressive player.

Step 2

Play with the proper form. Body position is key to to becoming a more aggressive player. Whether on offense or defense, your knees always should be slightly bent, your back straight and your head held up. Most importantly, keep your feet moving at all times. If you are getting caught flat-footed in basketball, it's nearly impossible to be aggressive.

Step 3

Making physical contact is part of the game, so don't shy away from it. Banging into opposing players -- even your own teammates -- is commonplace. Basketball is a contact sport and the aggressive players welcome physical play. Use your body to protect yourself from a potential injury. When dribbling the ball, keep the shoulder of your non-dribbling hand on the defender to prevent a hard foul or turnover. On defense, make sure your hands are up and out in front of your body.

Tips and Warnings

  • Be aggressive on the basketball floor but always stay under control. Always keep your feet moving and make sure your body is positioned to score or defend. Use your body for protection during contact with another player.
  • If you are too aggressive, you can hurt another player or foul out of the game. Don't initiate contact unless the opposing player jumps in front of you. Worrying about mistakes leads to more mistakes.
