Slimming With Sea Salt

Sea salt is part of the sea saltwater flush popularized by the Master Cleanse detoxification program. The sea saltwater flush is a colon cleanse that, according to Master Cleanse, helps individuals lose weight and gain optimal health. The colon flush is used for only one or two days and is usually combined with another detoxification method such as juice fasting. Medical science remains dubious of colon cleansing weight-loss claims and the Mayo Clinc warns that colon cleansing is not appropriate for everyone. Check with your doctor before using a saltwater flush as a method of weight loss.

Step 1

Fill a quart container with warm, filtered water.

Step 2

Add 2 tsp. of noniodized sea salt. Do not ever use iodized table salt in a saltwater flush. You can find noniodized sea salt at health food stores and online.

Step 3

Drink the sea saltwater first thing in the morning all at once. It might be difficult to drink one quart of saltwater in one sitting, but it must be accomplished to feel the full effects of the flush. Try drinking from a large straw if the saltwater makes you gag.

Step 4

Wait 30 minutes to one hour for the sea saltwater to make its way through your digestive system. Be prepared to stay close to the bathroom during this time and for the next hour or two. According to Master Cleanse, a saltwater flush may induce seven or more bowel movements, often loose, diarrhea stools.

Tips and Warnings

  • While anecdotal evidence exists supporting the efficacy of sea saltwater flushes as a way to lose weight, the best and healthiest way is through a combination of diet and exercise.
  • Do not perform a saltwater flush if you have high blood pressure or are on a low-sodium diet.
