Heart fluttering is an uncomfortable feeling or a noticeable beating of the heart. Heart fluttering is usually called heart palpitations and can occur for many reasons. Hormonal changes, medication side effects and even stress can cause heart palpitations. However, excessive use of some over-the-counter supplements, anaphylaxis and intolerance after taking supplements can also cause irregular heart beats or heart palpitations.

Calcium Supplement Side Effects

Calcium is used to keep the bones strong and to prevent weak bones that can lead to osteoporosis. Due to changes that naturally occur with age, menopause or pregnancy, you may need additional calcium in the form of a calcium supplement. Calcium supplements can cause side effects such as mild gas and constipation. However, multivitamins that contain calcium may also cause headache, nausea, abdominal discomfort and an unpleasant taste in the mouth.

Overdose Side Effects

Overuse of any product containing calcium can cause calcium overdose. A recommended daily allowance has been set for children and adults, which is the amount of calcium needed to support healthy bones and teeth. However, taking calcium beyond this level can cause irregular heartbeat and other symptoms, such as confusion, depression, muscle twitching, nausea and vomiting. If you have taken a large amount of calcium at once or calcium supplements at large doses over a longer time span and you've developed any of the above symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that involves a total immune system defense in response to allergens. Although anaphylaxis is most commonly associated with food allergies or venom, it can also occur when taking medications or over-the-counter supplements. During anaphylaxis, antibodies are released into the bloodstream along with histamine, which may cause classic anaphylaxis symptoms, such as hives, red skin, swelling in the mouth or face and abdominal pain. More severe symptoms of anaphylaxis are abnormal heart rhythm, fluid and the lungs and difficulty breathing. If you develop anaphylaxis after taking a calcium supplement or a supplement that contains calcium, such as the over-the-counter multivitamin supplement, seek emergency care immediately.

Considerations

Before taking any calcium supplements, consult with your physician. This is especially important for people who are taking medications and for women in the stage of post-menopause, who have an increased risk of heart attack from taking calcium supplements. If you experience abnormal heart rhythm at any point in taking any calcium supplements, contact your physician immediately.
