Sinuses, those chambers in the bone behind your cheeks, eyes and jaws, can be affected by the food you eat. Sinuses secrete mucus, which sweeps away bacteria and particles, while the cilia, or tiny hairs, push the mucus out though the nose. When the lining of the sinuses becomes inflamed and the mucus thickens, the painful condition that results is called sinusitis. It can cause symptoms such as pressure, headache, fever, congestion, dizziness, cough and fatigue. It's a common condition affecting about 37 million Americans annually.

Causes

Many things can cause inflammation of the sinuses. Temperature or air-pressure changes, allergies, smoking or polyps are just a few culprits. Treatments include allergy medication, decongestants, over-the-counter medications such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen, or saline nasal spray. Sinusitis from a bacterial or viral infection can cause a sinus infection, which is typically treated with antibiotics. When sinuses are inflamed and pain results, certain foods can help the inflammation, while others tend to worsen it.

Food Remedies

Some studies have shown that fresh pineapple can help ease inflammation of the sinuses. Pineapple stems and juice contain bromelain, a mix of protein-digesting enzymes that have been effective at reducing inflammation, including sinusitis, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Other helpful foods include those with a high concentration of vitamin C, which has been shown to shrink inflammation in the body. Foods rich in vitamin C include guavas, papayas, bell peppers, fresh herbs, leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower, kiwis, strawberries, oranges and cantaloupe. For instant relief from clogged sinuses, breathe in vapors from cayenne pepper, hot sauce, horseradish or its Japanese cousin, wasabi. This will provide immediate, though short-term, relief.

Liquid Remedies

When sinus pain occurs, drink plenty of water. It dilutes secretions, loosens mucus and promotes drainage. According to Family Doctor, sipping hot liquids such as herbal teas and low-sodium soups can also decrease inflammation of the sinuses. Breathing in the steam from these liquids can loosen mucus and shrink swelling, just as a steamy hot shower would.

Foods to Avoid

Some foods and drinks should be avoided when sinusitis occurs. Dairy products, for example, can cause phlegm to build up, which worsens sinusitis. Caffeine can dehydrate the nasal membranes and cause swelling. Alcoholic beverages should also be avoided. They can harden the mucus and worsen membrane swelling in the sinuses. Doctor Yourself recommends avoiding low-fiber foods such as meat, white bread and sugar, as well as processed foods that contain chemicals and preservatives, which can promote swelling.
