Andrographis Side Effects

Andrographis is a traditional Chinese and Indian herbal medicine used today to treat symptoms associated with a cold and with an upper respiratory tract infection. It is also used to stimulate the immune system. Andrographis is also referred to as the king of bitters and rice bitters. As with all supplements, herbal or otherwise, Andrographis manufacturers don't need FDA approval before selling their wares, although they must include a disclaimer stating the FDA has not evaluated claims purporting improved health or bodily functions. Andrographis side effects are considered mild and manageable.

Stomach Problems

Some people lose their appetite or get upset stomachs when taking Andrographis, according to both Drugs.com and the Physicians Desk Reference website titled PDRHealth.com. When this occurs, eVitamins.com recommends reducing the amount of taken or taking Andrographis with meals.

Heartburn and Ulcer Aggravation

People with ulcers or who suffer from heartburn tend to find that bitter herbs will aggravate the symptoms. Being that a nickname for this herb is the "king of bitters" it is not surprising that Andrographis is no exception to this rule. To minimize these symptoms, Communityconsortium.org recommends short-term use of Andrographis in addition to taking medications that neutralize stomach acid. Over-the-counter drugs that neutralize stomach acid are known as antacids and they come in tablet and liquid form. They are sold under well-known names like Tums, Rolaids, Maalox and Mylanta. Acid blockers like Tagamet and Pepcid are available by prescription to manage heartburn.

Hives

Although rare, both Drugs.com and VitaminHerbUniversity.com make mention of two clinical trial cases where patients experienced urticaria in conjunction with Andrographis consumption. Urticaria is better known as hives or raised welts that are accompanied by severe itching and can be treated using over-the-counter antihistamines that treat allergy symptoms like Benadryl, Zyrtec or Claritin. A doctor can prescribe oral steroids like prednisone and Medrol for for a short duration if hives are severe.
