Grandparents are special people in most families, and choosing gifts for them can be a challenge. According to the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, the best gift you can give grandparents is your love and affection, but sometimes you want to give them a tangible gift, too.
Time
One of the best gifts you can give grandparents is time with their grandchild. Older kids can make gift certificates that grandparents can cash in for one-on-one time, such as dinner together, sewing lessons or a special activity. For younger children, arrange a special play date or activity for them to do with their grandparents.
Photo Collage
By the time they become grandparents, many people have accumulated a wealth of photos. Borrow some of them, or sort through your own family photos to create a family tree collage. Once framed, a family tree collage is a special and sentimental gift idea for grandparents.
Appreciation
Help your children understand how lucky they are to have their grandparents by creating a love book together. Let each person in the family take one or two pages to write something that she appreciates about her grandparent and draw or paste a picture. Collect the pages in a book to make a special gift. If you're part of a large family, enlist other family members to add pages to the book, too.
Homemade Gifts
Grandparents appreciate the thought and effort that goes into homemade gifts. Ask your children to help bake a special cake or cookies for their grandparents---even young children can help pour and stir. Teach your child to knit, crochet or do basic embroidery, or help him make a bookmark or potholder. Encourage your child to paint a special picture or write a poem for his grandparent.
Art
Your child's art can make a special present for grandparents. Instead of just slipping a picture into a frame, consider scanning a drawing or painting into your computer and having it printed on notecards that can be used for correspondence. You can also scan several different artistic creations to make a calendar.
