Why Do Feet Go Numb When Running?

Numbness in the feet is generally not a major problem with most exercisers, although it can be uncomfortable and sometimes a little fear-inducing. There typically is not any major health issue involved in numbness of the feet during running.

Compression of the Nerves

One of the causes of numbness of the feet during running, and perhaps the most common, is compression of the nerves in the ankles. This is known as tarsal tunnel syndrome, which is basically the same thing as carpal tunnel in the wrist.

Feet Sliding

Sometimes numbness can be caused by the feet sliding forward into a narrow shoe, causing a slight swelling and thus numbness.

Beginners

Beginners oftentimes will feel numbness in their feet because they are just not used to the pounding. Other times numbness can be caused by an increase in mileage that the feet are just not used to.

Improper Lacing

Rarely, the laces being tied too tightly can cause numbness in the feet. If this is the case, you can try different lacing styles, or simply tie the laces a little looser to allow for greater blood flow.

Medical Condition

Occasionally numbness in the feet during running can signal a deeper-rooted medical condition. If this is so, consult your physician for steps to reduce or eliminate whatever the issue may be.
