Heparin is a blood-thinning medication used to prevent blood clots from forming in your veins, arteries and lungs, according to Drugs.com. It is also used prior to surgery to prevent the formation of blood clots when you are sedentary. Heparin is available as an injection to be administered by your doctor or yourself. An oral form of heparin is also available.
Common and Mild Side Effects
According to Drugs.com, you may experience a reaction when heparin is injected into your skin. Warmth, redness and pain at the injection site are heparin's most common side effects. You can also develop nausea, sweating and shortness of breath. Heparin may cause your feet to itch and your skin to turn blue. These symptoms are initially benign, but call your doctor if they continue.
Serious Side Effects
MedlinePlus states that heparin can cause unusual bleeding. You may notice black or bloody stools when you go to the bathroom. You can also have nosebleeds and bloody urine. Sometimes bleeding can be so profuse that it does not stop. In some instances, you may even cough up blood. Heparin can lead to a painful erection in men that can last four or more hours and, if left untreated, can lead to serious sexual damage. Heparin can cause a sudden severe headache. It can also lead to balance problems and lack of coordination. You may be confused, have difficulty speaking and may develop weakness of your legs, arms or face. Fever, chills, hives, increased sweating and difficulty breathing are other serious side effects of heparin use. Seek immediate medical help to stop further progression of these symptoms.
Osteoporosis
According to MedlinePlus, chronic heparin use can lead to a bone disease called osteoporosis. In osteoporosis, your bones become brittle and susceptible to fractures without major trauma. Your bones may be painful and tender. Osteoporosis can lead to a curved posture and broken back bones, called vertebral compression fractures.
Rare Side Effects
The Mayo Clinic states that heparin rarely causes chest pain, chills and blood blisters. Skin peeling, tearing of your eyes, hair loss, wheezing and chest tightness are other rare side effects of heparin. With chronic heparin use, you may experience rib pain, back pain or hair loss. Discontinue this medication under your doctor's supervision if these side effects become bothersome.
