Lacrosse goalie sticks have straight or offset handles. Some goalies prefer the offset, or slight curve below the head, because it positions the head at an angle away from an oncoming shot. This acclimation of the head allows for certain types of defending techniques and return-passes into the field. Lacrosse sticks are produced with wood, plastic or aluminum handles. Wooden sticks are milled and cannot be bent. Curving plastic sticks requires expertise and sophisticated equipment. You can curve an aluminum goalie stick with a portable bender and save the cost of a manufactured offset stick.
Step 1
Place a ratchet hand bender on a workbench. Attach the shortest bending arm at the head of the bender with the cotter pin. Fit the port of a 7/8-inch mandrel onto the front of the bender shaft. The design of the shaft makes it impossible to improperly fit the mandrel on the shaft.
Step 2
Hold the sick perpendicular to the bender with the stick against the bending arm. Position the stick so the center of the mandrel lines up with a point 8 inches from the end of the stick.
Step 3
Lift the handle of the bender slowly in a continuous motion to engage the mandrel and create the desired curve. Lower the handle of the bender to release the stick.
Tips and Warnings
- Many tool rentals have ratchet hand benders with accessory mandrels. Select the mandrel for the preferred curve. Curves in excess of 10 degrees are not allowed in most lacrosse leagues.
