Precor introduced the elliptical machine to the fitness world in 1995. The first elliptical machines were rear-drive machines, which meant the flywheel sat behind the pedals. Because Precor owned the patent on the rear-drive design, other fitness companies created front-drive elliptical machines — the flywheel is in front of the pedals. Each design offers a different stride motion and feel to the workout.
Design
A front-drive elliptical has the flywheel at the front of the machine. The pedals run on rails behind the flywheel. Some ellipticals have single wheels; others have double wheels, which are more durable and provide a more stable ride.
A rear-drive elliptical has the flywheel at the back of the machine. The pedals are suspended in the air, so rear-drive machines contain fewer parts and less maintenance.
Stride Motion
The design of a front-drive elliptical creates a motion similar to a stair climber. The path of the pedals is shorter and flatter than on a rear-drive elliptical. The design of a rear-drive elliptical creates a motion more like walking or jogging, which may feel more natural for some users. The path of the pedals is longer and more elliptical.
You are likely to lean forward on a front-drive elliptical machine, which may or may not be comfortable for you.
Stride Length
Stride length refers to the distance between the pedals at the widest point. Some elliptical machines have a fixed stride length between 16 and 22 inches, others have adjustable stride lengths. Short stride lengths can feel cramped and choppy, especially to taller users.
The drive design affects the feel of the stride. Because front-drive ellipticals have a shorter, flatter stride, you need a longer stride length to create the same feel as a rear-drive elliptical. In general, a 20-inch stride length on a front-drive machine equals an 18-inch stride length on a rear-drive machine.
Considerations
A rear-drive elliptical machine contains fewer moving parts, making it easier to maintain than a front-drive machine. The wheels on a front-drive machine wear out over time and have to be replaced.
Although each type of drive has its benefits and drawbacks, it ultimately is a matter of personal preference. Try both types of elliptical machine and find out what works best for you.
