Blistex manufactures a line of lip care products that include several different types of balms, ointment and other treatments. According to the Blistex website, the skin on lips does not tan, but is susceptible to sunburn. Many of Blistex products contain sunscreens that are formulated for SPF levels ranging from 15 to 20. A skin protectant is also included in most of these products along with many inactive ingredients which vary according to the particular Blistex formulation.
Sunscreens in Blistex
Blistex products contain various types of sunscreens including oxybenzone, avobenzone, octinoxate, octocrylene and padimate. They are used in various combinations to obtain SPF levels of 15 or 20. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, oxybenzone and avobenzone are broad-spectrum, blocking both UVA and UVB rays of the sun.
Lip Protectants in Blistex
According to the FDA, skin protectants provide protection and relief to skin surfaces that are exposed to irritants. Petrolatum and dimethicone are the agents that are used as skin protectants in Blistex products. Petrolatum is a hydrocarbon product while dimethicone is a product with a silicone base.
Inactive Ingredients in Blistex
Each formulation of Blistex contains varying types of inactive ingredients. Many of the lip balms include beeswax and microcrystalline wax to form the lip balm base. Some formulations include CoQ10, vitamin E, plant extracts and artificial colors.
