Exercise Equipment for Truck Drivers

Driving an over-the-road truck long distances is a demanding way to make a living. In addition to the long hours spent traveling U.S. highways, it can be difficult to find opportunities to exercise. Nevertheless, many truck drivers take some portable exercise equipment with them and use well-planned breaks to exercise and work out. This can help avoid muscle stiffness and build overall conditioning.

Dumbbells

Having one or two dumbbells in the cab of your truck can give you a chance to build strength, avoid fatigue and feel better during your journey. Exercises such as arm curls and lunges can give your muscles a solid workout. Ideally, stop and get out of your truck, taking the time for a workout during a break. However, you may be able to use one weight on one arm while having your other hand on the wheel.

Resistance Bands

Resistance bands should be used when you can make a stop. You might be able to work your right arm by attaching the resistance band to a spot on the passenger side of the cab, but, to get a full-body workout, you need to get out of the cab. Resistance bands are light and easy to transport while on a cross country trip. They can be especially useful for stretching out back and leg muscles that may get stiff over a long drive.

Rubber Balls

Squeezing a rubber ball can provide excellent strengthening for your hands, forearms, biceps and shoulders. Squeeze a rubber ball for 10 minutes per arm while in the midst of your journey to help you concentrate and stay awake over a long trip. Knowing you have scheduled 10 minutes for exercise time -- even if it is squeezing a rubber ball -- will give you more focus and alertness on your journey.

Exercise Truck Stops

While you can't take an entire gym with you on your run, you can schedule stops at truck stops that have workout facilities. If your trip goes off as scheduled -- no weather or equipment delays -- you can schedule stops at workout facilities on a daily basis so you can run, swim, lift weights or do other resistance exercises.
