The stick, or crosse, is the primary tool of a lacrosse player. It utilizes a mesh net pocket that allows the player to scoop, catch and throw the ball. A small pocket affects your ability to control the ball during game play. When you get a new stick, breaking it in includes stretching the net to establish a deep pocket. You can use the same stretching method to maintain the shape of the pocket when you store the stick.

Step 1

Press a lacrosse ball into the center of the pocket. Push the ball down past the sidewall and hold it there. The sidewall is the solid fabric band along the rim of the net.

Step 2

Insert the screwdriver into one side of the pocket just under the sidewall, and then push it through to the other side. Place the screwdriver approximately 1/4 inch above or below the center of the ball. The goal is to allow the top of the ball to sit above the bottom edge of the sidewall.

Step 3

Store the stick with the ball and screwdriver in place. This will stretch the pocket for the next game.

Tips and Warnings

  • If the center of the ball does not extend above the bottom edge of the sidewall, reposition the screwdriver.
  • The top edge of the ball should not push past the top of the sidewall.
